Switzerland Cruise Past Algeria to Reach World Cup Round of 16

Vancouver: Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver to book their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, coupled with a disciplined defensive display, ensured a straightforward win for the Swiss side.

The victory marked a historic achievement for Switzerland, who recorded three consecutive World Cup wins for the first time in their history. The Swiss had already defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina and co-host Canada during the group stage and continued their impressive form in the knockout rounds.

Switzerland will now await the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Colombia and Ghana, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

The Swiss took control early in the match and opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Yohan Manzambi surged forward on a rapid attack before delivering a precise pass into the penalty area. Breel Embolo met it six meters from goal and fired a powerful shot past the Algerian goalkeeper to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead.

Algeria struggled to create meaningful opportunities and found themselves further behind immediately after the restart. Just one minute into the second half, defender Rafik Belghali failed to clear the ball effectively inside his own penalty area. The loose ball fell kindly to Dan Ndoye, who reacted quickly and drilled a low shot beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane to double Switzerland’s advantage.

With a two-goal cushion, Switzerland comfortably controlled possession and limited Algeria’s attacking threat. The North African side found it difficult to break through the Swiss defense and were unable to mount a comeback.

Heading into the match, Switzerland had lost only one of their previous 17 international fixtures, underlining the challenge facing Algeria. That impressive consistency was once again on display as the Swiss combined attacking efficiency with defensive solidity to seal their place in the next round.

Algeria battled throughout the contest but lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble their opponents. Having conceded once in each half, they were unable to find a route back into the game and saw their World Cup campaign come to an end.

Switzerland, meanwhile, continue to build momentum and confidence as they advance to the Round of 16, where they will look to extend their historic winning streak and move one step closer to the latter stages of the tournament.
